Seahawks and Broncos History:

The NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks and AFC Champion Denver Broncos will meet as Super Bowl foes for the first time ever. But, the rivalry goes back several decades to the day when they were both intra conference and division rivals. The Broncos were the Hawks' division rivals back when Seattle was part of the AFC West. Seattle's NFL team didn't move to the NFC until 2002.

Seattle faced off against the Denver Broncos at least twice a year from 1977 to 2001. During that era, the Broncos dominated the division, winning the NFC West nine times, and and went to the Super Bowl six of those years, winning it all in '97 and '98.

The all-time series is led by the Broncos, 34-18. The Broncos are 21-5 at home and 13-13 on the road against the Hawks.

Both teams met earlier in 2013 in a preseason game that did not seem much of a matchup at the time. The Seattle Seahawks defense forced three turnovers and quarterback Russell Wilson did the rest to lead the Seahawks to a 30-10 victory over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

By the Numbers:

  Number of meetings:    52 meetings

  Most recent meeting:    Pre-season 2013 Seattle 40, Denver 10

Playoff Record:     Seattle leads Denver 1-0 (only one meeting)

  All-time series:    Denvers-Seattle record 34-18

  Largest victory:    SEA: 42-14 (1988)

Current streak:    Denver: 1 win (2010–) reg. season

Longest Seattle win streak:    SEA: W3 (1987-1988)

Longest Denver win streak:    DEN: W6 (1996–1998))

The Rivalry

The Rivarly escalates from the late 80s well into the 90s.

Top 5 Rivalry Highlights:
5.  An Old Bitter Rivalry Revived

The Broncos and Seahawks were division rivals back when Seattle was part of the AFC West, up until Seattle moved to the NFC until 2002. This allowed local fans 25-years to build up a dislike for each other. Although the Broncos dominated most of the era, the rivalry peaked in the mid to late 80s, with the "Bronco Busters" motto becoming part of Seattle pop culture.

Among the most memorable Bronco Busting moments were two games in 1988, starting when wide receiver Steve Largent was knocked out for several minutes by Denver's Mike Harden. Three months later, Largent got his revenge on Harden with a hit of his own that brought fans to their feet for minutes. After that, Seattle shops quickly sold out of "Bronco Busters" T-shirts.

4.  The Weed Bowl

Call it a coincidence, but, in the same year the only two states in the country where marijuana has been legalized, both cities now find themselves headed to the Super Bowl.

The showdown betwen the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks is dream come true for many fans, and biblical for quite a few stoners. Nicknamed as the Weed Bowl, the Super Bud Bowl, and the Hash Bowl... this year's Super Bowl is the game marijuana-enthusiasts everywhere have been waiting for.

3.  Wilson vs. Manning - Old meets New

The two men leading the Super Bowl offense couldn't be much different.  Here's some quick stats:

Wilson is 25 years old, 5' 11" and 201 lbs.  Russell has 27 TD passes, only 9 interceptions, and 539 rushing yards.  Peyton Manning is 38, a towering 6' 5" and 230 lbs. This year he has 59 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions and -13 rushing yards.

Wilson's annual salary is $681,085, in his second professional year
Manning maxes out the $17.5 salary cap in year 16 with NFL

In his record-breaking 2013 season, Manning is now up to 59 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions, including the postseason. Russell Wilson has less than half as many touchdown passes, 27, but fewer interceptions, nine.

2.  A Tale of Two Cities... and their Fans!

It is a well known fact that players can draw energy from the passion of their fans.  And both Seahawk and Bronco fans are examples of exceptional enthusiasm.  If you've watching either of their home games, it looks like something out of a Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Seahawks fans, nicknamed the "12th Man", are known for tormenting their opponents with record breaking noise.  Their most notably fans are the Green SeaHulk, Mama Blue and the Sea Pimp.

And the Broncos counter just as well with The Bronconator, Darth Bronco and the spirit of The Bronco Barrell Man (RIP-2009).

1.  Top Offense vs. Top Defense

The Seahawks were ranked first in the league in pass defense, total defense and scoring defense during the regular season. The Broncos were first in pass offense, total offense and scoring offense. Manning had the most prolific season ever for an NFL quarterback. He set season records with his 5,477 passing yards and 55 touchdown passes and is virtually assured of winning his fifth MVP award.

Even so, the Seahawks clearly won’t feel defenseless if the Super Bowl comes down to a final Broncos’ drive with the ball in Manning’s hands. Richard Sherman said the Seahawks are exactly where they wanted to be this season after a near-miss loss at Atlanta in a conference semifinal last season.
